How old does my child have to be to participate in a study?
We are looking for children 10 months old to 12 years old.

What does this lab study?

Our lab is interested in how young learners understand probability, reason about preferences, make categorizations, and acquire language. For more information about specific study goals, please visit our Projects page!

How long does a study take?
15-30 minutes. However, we make appointments for 45 minutes to 1 hour so that parents have time to sign consent forms, and so that researchers can explain the research and answer any questions parents might have.

Do I get to see my child participate in the study?
Yes! We have parents sit with their child throughout the study.

Can I bring along my other children who are not participating in the study?
Yes! We have toys and coloring books, and can arrange for supervision while you remain with your child during the study.

Is there any kind of compensation?
While we do not offer monetary compensation, your child will receive a diploma for his/her participation along with a t-shirt or toy.

When is the lab open?
Our lab is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. We can also sometimes accommodate Saturday and Sunday appointments.

Where is the lab located?
We are located on the UC Berkeley campus, near the intersection of Berkeley Way and Shattuck. Click here for a Google Map location.

I had a lot of fun, can I come back again?
Of course! We have a number of studies running at any one time. As your child ages, they often begin to qualify for new studies. Although parents often choose to come back and participate in other studies, participation is voluntary and you are not committed to any other visits.

How can I reach you?
If you would like more information, feel free to e-mail us at babylab@berkeley.edu or call us at (510) 643-7059.
